PA Access All Areas launched in 2012 to fill a need for professional development for PAs who specifically work for high flying bosses.
Josephine and Merryl share skills and strategies learnt at the sharp end, offering practical ways to support powerful people. Focusing on interpersonal skills, topics include: working with alpha bosses, support networks, setting boundaries, practical problem solving. As working PAs, they’re acutely aware of the daily demands and ever-changing nature of the PA role and aim to empower delegates.
Merryl Futerman and Josephine Green
met through PA colleagues in 2004. They then
discovered several previous connections including having
attended the same Secondary school!
Merryl’s background was in film and publishing PR, where she discovered she was good at looking after people and organising them. Wanting to use these skills and experience for individuals in the long term, rather than on a project by project basis, 15 years ago she set about finding what she thought was a made up job. Coincidentally she had just had her second daughter and resolved to find a way to combine working with motherhood.
Her first client was, and still is, Julian Clary, she has also worked for Jonathan Ross, Anne Robinson and Denise Van Outen amongst others, with a maximum of 3 clients at one time, for between three months and three years. By being freelance she tailors her client load according to what is going on at home, and this arrangement has worked well. She loves the fact that no two days are ever the same and gets up in the morning with absolutely no idea of what challenge that day might throw her.
Merryl has blogged for a variety of publications including the Secs in the City website, offering light heart-hearted insights on the life of a Celebrity PA.
Josephine began her career in music, film and fashion PR. After five years in that industry, she started working as a freelance Personal Assistant in 2003. Within a few months she became PA to Joseph Fiennes. She is still working with him today. Since then, she has continued to add clients to her roster: Emilia Fox in 2004, Alexander Armstrong in 2007, Ben Miller in 2008 and Miranda Hart in 2010. In addition to this client list, Josephine has also taken on various short term clients and projects in the last nine years.
From 2012 to 2014, Josephine was a resident on Executive PA Magazine’s PA Panel. A page of the magazine dedicated to discussing topical issues affecting PAs and their working worlds. She was also a judge for PitmanTraining's Super Achiever 2012 Awards. Josephine is a keen Twitterer and a proud dog owner!
Josephine and Merryl are both founding members of the Celebrity Assistants Network (CAN). The group was set up in 2006 to facilitate PAs who are often quite isolated in their work to have colleagues.
Josephine and Merryl are both recognised as experts in their fields and between them have appeared in various print and online articles in The Guardian, PA Life, Executive PA Magazine, London PA Magazine, Secs and The City, Executive Secretary Magazine, The VA Magazine and Metro.
They have also been asked to impart their wisdom and speak at various industry events including: Be Your Own PA: How to be a Celebrity PA, Executive PA Magazine: The Power of the PA, Hays PA Networking Events, VACT conferences, Hays Annual Conference, Office Manager and PA Show, Office* 2012 - 2016.
In 2016, they proudly launched PA Insiders. A totally free online community for sharing information, offering support and networking. An invaluable resource for PAs in every industry and any location. We PAs know everything there is to know about everything. Let’s put it all in one place. PA Insiders is that place.
